Studying with us for a qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, will help you to develop and demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to work in an entry-level or specialist role within an educational setting.
This qualification aims to assist with the increasing demand for trained specialist support staff, who are able to aid pupils’ learning and development, as well help you to develop valuable skills with which to build relationships with colleagues and parents.
For Level 3 Diploma, you must gain 44 credits (32 credits from 11 mandatory units and 12 credits from 4 or 5 optional units)
The primary purpose is to confirm your ability in a specialist supportive teaching and learning role in a school environment. You’ll develop the skills and knowledge needed to provide effective specialist support for teachers and pupils.
Candidates achieving Level 3 may progress on to Level 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistant Course, or further into education and teaching. There are also various other diploma and degree qualifications available through Need 2 Succeed or nationally through other providers and colleges.
Achievement of this qualification will indicate both knowledge and competence required to practice as a Teaching Assistant, classroom or learning support assistant; special needs assistant; behaviour support assistant/coordinator; pastoral/welfare assistant; foundation stage assistant or team leader. You could also use this qualification to progress into further learning within the education sector.
This qualification is also designed to make up the component part of the Advanced Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools apprenticeship. The primary purpose of the qualification is to confirm competence in an occupational role to the standards required and covers areas such as:
Communication and professional relationships
Schools as organisations
Support learning activities
Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour
Develop professional relationships
Support assessment for learning
Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
Understand child and young person development
Assessment for each level will be through the completion of a digital e-portfolio of evidence, workbook study tasks, evaluation of learning and workplace observations. (Workplace observations not required for Level 2 Award).
There may be opportunities for funding, subject to conditions. If you are employed and working over 21 hours, your course can be 95% funded through our level 2 and level 3 apprenticeship pathways, if available.
If you are 19+ unemployed or earning below £20,962 (inner London) or £17,004 (outer London) and it’s your first level 2 qualification, you may be eligible for full funding.
If you are not eligible, please talk to us about payment plans, to spread the cost of your training. A deposit will be required.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but you must be aged over 18 and either employed or have regular access to a school teaching assistant environment.
We recommend that you have a good command of literacy and numeracy before enrolling on these courses. We can provide support for this through our programme of online and classroom study for English, Maths and ICT.
You need to be regularly working directly with children in a school setting and have the support of an organisation throughout your study.
All new entrants must be willing to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check; you can not start studying until you have proof of this.
