Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management

Course Aims

This qualification is ideal for Team Leaders, Supervisors, First-line Managers, Heads of Operations or Departments and those aspiring to senior management roles. You will develop the knowledge and skills that allow you to effectively manage teams, individuals, organisations or departments and they are suitable for anyone working in the private, public or community and voluntary sectors.

The qualification has been developed by the Sector Skills Council for this sector, Skills CFA, and is recognised as the main qualifications for Level 3 and Level 5 in Leadership and Management for the UK.

Qualification Objective

If you are self-funded, sponsored or taking on a payment plan, you will only need to complete a portfolio of evidence and assignments. Once you have passed your assessed units, you will be awarded a Level 5 Diploma in Management & Leadership from BIIAB.

If you are studying through our funded apprenticeship pathway, you will need to complete the additional components below:

  • 20% of your time spent on off-the-job training
  • Complete a unit workbook on employee rights and responsibilities
  • Complete a knowledge test
  • Structured competency-based interview
  • Submit a portfolio of evidence
  • CPD log or professional discussion
  • Work-based presentation and Q&A session (Level 5 only)

About the Qualification

This qualification can be taken separately or as part of a larger apprenticeship programme of study and enables you to develop knowledge in Management & leadership and progress to the next level of vocational learning.

It forms the knowledge requirements for the Level 5 Higher Level Apprenticeship in Operation/Departmental Management.

If you are working as an operation or departmental manager who leads teams and/or projects, as part of the delivery of the organisation’s strategy; you will be well-suited to Level 5. You are likely to be accountable to a more senior manager or a business owner. Key responsibilities may include creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, managing change, financial and resource management, talent management, coaching and mentoring.

It supports the skills and knowledge learners need to become a competent Operations/Department Manager. Learners will complete this qualification with a concrete understanding such as:

  • Foundation of excellence
  • Principles of management and leadership
  • Developing capabilities, delivering results and driving best practice
  • Interpersonal excellence – Managing people and developing relationships
  • Organisational performance – Delivering results (day-to-day activities)
  • Personal effectiveness – Managing self
  • Course Length

    12-18 months involving 12 monthly teaching days (or 24 evening sessions) plus assessment time and independent study.

    Each level is assessed through the completion of a portfolio of evidence, workbook study tasks, assessment of learning and workplace observations (if required). For the apprenticeship pathway, there will also be an endpoint assessment carried out by an independent awarding body.

  • Course Cost

    • £2375 (Level 5 Diploma)

    There may be opportunities for funding, subject to conditions. If you are employed and working over 21 hours, your course can be 95% funded through our level 3 apprenticeship pathways, if available.

    If you are not eligible, please talk to us about payment plans, to spread the cost of your training. A deposit will be required.

  • Eligibility

    There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but you must be aged over 18 and either employed or have regular access to a work environment.

    We recommend that you have an excellent command of literacy and numeracy before enrolling on these courses to at least Level 2 (GCSE A*-C or 4-9). We can provide support for this through our programme of online and classroom study for English, Maths and ICT.
